The City of DuPont is undertaking a periodic review of its Shoreline Master Plan (SMP). The current SMP was adopted by the City in February 2013. The Shoreline Management Act (SMA) requires each SMP be reviewed and revised on an eight-year schedule established by the Legislature, see WAC 173-26-090. This new schedule requires that all cities and towns within Pierce County complete a periodic review of their SMP by June 30, 2019. The review ensures the SMP stays current with changes in laws and rules, remains consistent with other DuPont plans and regulations, and is responsive to changed circumstances, new information and improved data. The Department of Ecology publishes a checklist of state laws, rules or other applicable documents that have been adopted or amended each year that require local governments to review their SMP for conformance.
On April 24th, the City held the first of two planned open houses for the public to learn about the city’s SMP update efforts. It is the city’s intent with this update process to only amend our SMP as needed to address changes required due to changes in state laws. After a presentation by the City’s consultant, the public was encouraged to ask questions and submit comment cards.
The next Open House is schedule for May 30th at 6:30 pm.
