DuPont-Steilacoom Road will be expanded from 1 lane in each direction to 2 lanes in each direction, doubling the existing capacity of the road. Wharf Road is the northern limit and Pendleton Avenue is the southern limit.
There will be a future connection to I-5 as part of WSDOT’s improvements along the I-5/JBLM corridor.
State of Washington funds provides $3.9M for this project.
Project expansion is limited to the existing widths of 3 stream culverts and the existing real estate easement from JBLM. Expanding beyond these two limits will increase the cost of the project by 5X and triple the length of time.
The increased capacity on DuPont-Steilacoom Road is needed as we have seen a 29% increase in daily traffic volume from 2014 to 2019. In 2014, there were 13,266 daily vehicles counted on DuPont Steilacoom Road just north of Center Drive, and in 2019 that volume increased to 17,146 daily vehicles.
Two differing street profiles along the length of the project.
Walls will be installed at the wetland or culvert locations. A dedicated pedestrian path will be on one side of the road.
